This is How Neuroscientists Burn Calories!

You’re smart, you like science-based fitness. This should be right up your ally!
I’ve got some thoughts I’d like to share with you about what I’ve been reading these last few weeks.

So recently, I’ve been seeing a whole about Andrew Huberman EVERYWHERE. He’s a neuroscientist based out of Stanford, and he has a podcast that’s about optimizing your life. Having studied neuroscience myself during my time as an undergrad, I’ve done some deeper dives into some of the things he teaches and wanted to share some of the things I’ve learned along the way

The first relates to fat loss. Why do some people stay skinny no matter what they eat? Do they have superior genes? Eat less than they claim? You won’t believe it. It really has more to do with…fidgeting. Yes, fidgeting. Tapping your leg at the desk, talking with your hands, getting up and walking around the house more. A study was done that shows that people who fidget more can burn anywhere from 800-2500 MORE calories per day. And this doesn’t include exercise! So maybe I should just fidget more…

The next has to do with sleep, one of the most important factors for any kind of growth in your life. Here are some of my recommendations:

Sunlight in the morning

Do something that raises alertness: cold shower, short exercise, eat

Delay caffeine for 90 minutes after waking up

Dim lights at night and keep them low. Moonlight and candle light are great alternatives.

Your body likes COLD at night. A cool room helps, and a hot shower helps your body cool down to fall asleep

Supplements that may help are magnesium, apigenin, and theanine

Breathe through your nose. Some people even taped their mouth!

Go to sleep and wake up and the same times every day!

Lastly, one thing I’ve been trying is not using my phone until at least 30 minutes after waking up, ideally 60 minutes. This starts the day off right and helps my mood tremendously. In a digital age, it’s important to take a step back and live in the here and now. Give it a try!

Thanks for taking the time to read through all of this. I’m sure you’ll be able to make a few of them work for yourself, let me know how it goes!
Do let me know of any topics you’d like to get my thoughts on.

Thanks as always,
CP
